FIVE more Philippine languages will now be available on Google Translate, the search platform announced on Thursday.
In addition to Cebuano, Ilocano and basic Filipino (Tagalog), the platform said it now has Bicolano (Bikol), Hiligaynon (Ilonggo), Kapampangan, Pangasinan and Waray.
These languages were added to the 110 other languages available in Google Translate, which include Breton (spoken in France), Abkhaz (spoken in Georgia), Faroese, Greenlandic, Manx, Occitan, Tibetan and Cantonese, which is widely used in Hong Kong.
"From Cantonese to Q'eqchi', these new languages represent more than 614 million speakers, opening up translations for around 8 percent of the world's population. Some are major world languages with over 100 million speakers," Google said in a statement.
"Now, we're using artificial intelligence to expand the variety of languages we support. Thanks to our PaLM 2 large language model, we're rolling out 110 new languages to Google Translate, our largest expansion ever," it added.
The PaLM 2 model allows efficient translation of languages closely related.
"There's a lot to consider when adding new languages to Translate — everything from what varieties we offer to what specific spellings we use," it said.
